Es Castell is an excellent place for people who want a great base to explore the island and enjoy probably one of best locations for summer evenings out on the island. Approximately 3 km east of the capital Mahon and 10 km from the Airport.
Es Castell Overview
Es Castell,is full of history and charm. One of the best locations on the island for summer evenings and lunch time meals in the town's side streets or down in the delightful harbour sides. The town's fishing harbour - Cales Fonts and has become a little haven of restaurants and bars (no loud music ) favoured by locals and tourists alike. A truely genuine atmosphere not found in beach locations and which attracts people from these resorts. Founded in Georgian times as a military town this influence can be seen in the town's architecture and layout. All adds up to make Es Castell a great place to visit or stay in.
Es Castell has every concievable thing you need within walking distance in the town and larger supermarkets at Sant Luis and Mahon are just a 10mn drive away.
The two fishing harbours Cales Corb and Cales Fonts define the character of the town providing delightful water side promenades for daytime or evening strolls. With great Bars and Restaurants along the waterside and in the town's little side streets. Good selection of shops, mini supermarkets, banks (inc ATMs), Bars and Restaurants within a few minutes walk. And of course cosmopolitan Mahon is also close by ( 25 minute walk-for us anyway ).
While there is no beach at Es Castell there are delightful places to take a swim with access points into the sea. There are sunbathing platforms at lovely Cala Padera, 5 min walks from Cales Fonts harbour.
Menorca Holiday Tips
Carrer Gran , the main shopping road has a number of Bar-Restuarants serving good value set menus day and evening and will be lower priced than those on the water front.
Es Castell - Shopping and Supermarkets
Supermarkets: Being a local town the food shops and supermarkets have much better prices than beach resorts - see locations map
TABAC - Cigarettes
The town TABAC shop is on the corner opposite Spar Supermarket on Carrer Victori - see maps
As a residential town there is everything for your daily needs in Es Castell with four medium sized supermarkets, several traditional bakers and butchers shops, including health foods store. Check locations on the map below.
There are some small boutique clothes stores but of course Mahon with it's good shopping is just a short distance away. Es Castell has a weekly morning market ( Tuesdays 8-12 ) on the central square and in summer there are delightfull clothes, trinkets and souvenir stalls and shops along the harbour side in converted fisherman's caves. In summer there are often additional night markets with artisan foods and handicrafts in various locations.
The picture perfect waterside is a major attraction of Es Castell as the town has two harbours of it's own plus it sits on the long lovely bay of Mahon with great views from many locations including local Hotels. Es Castell is a good base to explore all the south east of the island has to offer. There is the island's most regular bus service ( half hourly including Sundays ) into Mahon from where you can reach any other destination.
Take a stroll evenings along the pretty lit harbour promenades. Start at the Hotel Hamilton and follow this around to Cales Fonts and beyoynd to Santa Ana steps. UPDATE the promenade at Moll de Pons is having a major extention to Cala corb for 2020 season - this will link the two harbours.
There is a network of pretty camis ( little country roads ) with villages and hamlets to explore on foot or bicycle. If you are staying at Es Castell an evening dip at Cala Padera is a must or out to Cala Sant Esteve charming inlet.
Boat envy : In summer between 4 and 5 pm you can sit and watch the myriad of boats passing by the harbour mouth on their way back into their berths in Mahon harbour.
